How to Host a Game Night for Adult Friends
Hosting friends for a game night is a pleasant way to spend an evening, but it takes a little planning to keep things relaxed. The goal is a space where everyone can join in, whether they play often or have not touched a board game in years.
Choose games with a short learning curve
If half your guests are new to modern board games, avoid heavy rulebooks. A game that can be explained in five minutes lets people start playing and learn by doing. Save the longer strategy games for a smaller group who ask for them.
Think about the room
Make sure everyone can reach the table and see the board. Keep drinks away from cards and boards by using a side table. Good lighting matters more than most hosts expect.
Keep food simple
Finger foods that do not leave sticky fingers on the cards, such as nuts, fruit and crackers, keep the game moving. Ask guests in advance about dietary needs.
Read the room
If a game drags on, be willing to switch. Having a short backup game on hand lets you change the mood without making anyone feel responsible for the change.
